Hardwood flooring is available in several different forms
Solid Hardwood Solid hardwood floors are a single, solid piece of wood that features tongue and groove sides for easy installation. Solid wood floors are quite prone to absorbing moisture. For this reason, they are not recommended for applications below ground level, or directly on top of a concrete slab. For these areas of your home, flooring professionals will always recommend using an engineered hardwood floor.
Pre-finished Solid Hardwood Pre-finished hardwood flooring comes straight from the factory ready to be installed in your home. These hardwood boards have been sanded, stained, and finished with a polyurethane surface coating where they were manufactured. In many cases, this provides a more durable, better-protected floor surface. After several coats of polyurethane have been sprayed onto the boards, they are then UV dried to create an extremely durable surface finish with a great luster.
Pre-finished floors are available in a wider variety of different wood species and save many hours of labor and cleanup. When they inevitably wear down and look dull after many years in place, they may also be sanded down and re-coated by an inexpensive hardwood refinishing process, to replace the worn finish and give you back your floor’s original good looks and excellent durability for many years.
Site-finished Solid Hardwood If you want a custom stained hardwood floor, or a wood floor to match existing trim, than a floor finished in your home will be necessary. Site finishing means you begin with bare uncoated hardwood flooring. Once that is installed, the floor will have to be sanded, stained, and finished in your home. The only advantage of site finishing will be if you become concerned with tiny uneven height differences between planks. In such a case, the sanding process will smooth out any small height differences in the floor. However, be aware that this process can create quite a mess, and normally takes several days to complete.
Engineered Hardwood Engineered hardwood floors make good sense to use in moisture-prone locations such as basements that are below ground level. Engineered hardwood floors are usually fabricated by using as many as 5 or 6 thin layers of wood that are laminated to create a single flooring plank. This cross-ply assembly makes the finished plank highly resistant to expansion and contraction due to moisture. Engineered floors can be installed in numerous ways. They can be nailed, stapled glued down, and even floated over nearly any sub-floor, including some existing flooring materials.
